FEFAC draws the attention of Commissioner Andriukaitis to the role of animal nutrition in the fight against AMR

On the European Antibiotic Awareness Day (18 November 2016), FEFAC sent a letter to the European Commissioner for Health & Food Safety Vytenis Andriukaitis stating the importance of including nutritionally optimised animal feed as a tool in the development of the EU One-Health action plan to reduce antimicrobial resistance.

In the letter ((16) INST 38), FEFAC highlights the contribution of adequate animal feed to the health and well-being of farm animals. With the preservation of animal health, the need for medical treatment, including antibiotics, will be reduced. FEFAC recommends the Commissioner to have the animal feed sector included in the future “One-Health AMR Network” and have Member States include a chapter on animal feed in their national action plans to reduce antimicrobial resistance.
